The Power of Your Words

Your words have power, so choose them wisely. Your words have the power to make someone’s day, to uplift them, encourage them, and inspire them. They also have the power to break someone’s day, to tear them down, and take the wind out of their sails.

In life, leadership, and business, we have the opportunity to build others up in our conversations, engagements, and relationships. I have personally been on the receiving side of words that have both built me up as well as broken me down.

Think about a time in your life or business where someone’s words stuck with you in a memorable way, both positive and not so positive. Think about a time when your words may have done the same to somebody else.

This week’s blog is just a short reminder to consider the words you will choose when you engage with others. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is the difference between responding versus reacting to the things people say and do in my life.

There have been times when a person’s words and actions have caught me off guard, frustrated me greatly, or have just been plain mean and cruel.  My initial knee jerk reaction is to fight back with the same, if not stronger, words and actions.

When I can take a minute to take everything in and consider the position and posture this person is coming from, take a minute to calm down, and then take time to consider the source, motivation and relevance of the feedback, I can come up with a great and more kind response; assuming a response is even warranted.

As you journey though life, leadership, and business, be sure you are acting as a light of hope, source of encouragement, and wise chooser of your words.
