The Power of Sharing Your Story

“What’s your story?”

I believe this is one of the most important questions you can ask somebody.  It opens the door for them to share their life journey with you, and for you to do the same.  As this process happens, connections are made, trust is formed and relationships flourish. I have personally had business partnerships form, deep friendships grow and flourish, and met and married the love of my life simply by asking and answering this question.

As important of a question as this is, there is a manner and timing in which to ask it that makes it more impactful.

One of the most beautiful parts of our recent Hike of a Lifetime on the Camino de Santiago was hearing the stories of the men who journeyed with us.  When we first met as a group at the Madrid airport, most of the participants did not know know each other.  As we rode the train into Madrid during our first hours together, many of the men began to engage in small talk.  The group slowly began to get to know each other, build rapport and become comfortable with each other.

The following day, we began our hike from Sarria to Portomarin.  We had a long day, and a 15 mile hike, in front of us.  The time, space and environment was ideal for the men to get to dig deep and learn more about each other.

As we hiked together, our group of seven broke off into a few smaller groups, and the men began engaging and connecting.

Here are a few tips on how to take the next step and ask that ever important question:

A big tip here, and where I see people connect at a very deep level, is when one or both are engaged in brave and vulnerable conversations.  When we can enter a space and a place to share parts of our life and story that are challenging, difficult and embarrassing, this brings about a level of humanity and relatability to the person you are connecting with.  Many times others will reciprocate, thus deepening the conversation and your relationship.

As you journey through life, leadership and business, I challenge and encourage you to consider those around you whose stories you can explore and how you can deepen your relationship with them.
