Can You Unplug?

One of the most magical moments of the Hike of a Lifetime on the Camino de Santiago was the fact that we completely unplugged from the electronic world.  Before we took the first step of our journey, we turned off our phones and put them away.  This was a very powerful exercise and experience for a couple of reasons.

First, it reminded us of how much we are connected to our phones and electronic devices.  It reminded us of how plugged in, available, and ready we are to pick up our phones, scroll, browse, email, text and get pulled into the busy and hectic world we live in.  When we do this, we forget that being can not be focused on while we are so busy doing.

Secondly, it gave us space as men and leaders to connect, talk, share stories, and challenge and encourage each other, all while digging in deep with each other.  When we were not connected to our electronics, we created an environment of deep reflection and connection that was much needed for our souls.

A few questions for you:

How plugged in are you, and how often?  How often do you turn your phone off, put it away, and completely unplug?  Are you able to do this?  If not, give it a try! It may be that you can only do this for a few minutes, or a half hour at first, just start somewhere.

When you disconnect, how do you feel?  The first time I did this I felt a little anxious, like I was missing out on being available to everyone for everything all the time. But as time went on, I began to feel more at peace and connected to those around me in the moment and on the experience of the Camino.

Remember that life, leadership and business is a journey, and a fast moving, fast paced one at that.  There is always so much we can be doing.  Please remember to stop doing and just be every once in a while.  Sit and rest.  Unplug, disconnect, recenter, revision and refocus on what is important to you, your life, your family and those around you that you love.
