Stop Setting Goals and New Year’s Resolutions. Small Business Advice for 2018.

Do you want to know a little secret? I no longer make New Year’s resolutions or goals because I stopped doing it a long time ago. Have you ever planned anything for yourself but failed to bring it to a successful conclusion? I have! Have you ever tried to justify or rationalize why it was OK that you did not accomplish what you set out to do? I have. Why does something like this occur, and more importantly, who is it that you let down when something like this does take place?

The truth is, as humans we are okay letting ourselves down but we will not let others down.  We make excuses that personal failure is okay, but we will not fail others.  We justify that achieving 80% of our goal is better than 70%, even though it was not 100%. What about when somebody is counting on you, is this still okay?

Create and keep promises, commitments, and achievements for others rather than creating objectives for yourself. This will help you achieve more. Instead of losing weight purely for your benefit of yourself, make a promise to your partner and your children that you will become healthy if you lose 20 pounds. Instead of making a goal to double your income for yourself, make a promise to your family that providing them with twice as much money will result in a more stable financial family tree and legacy.

Start off 2018 by making a commitment to your spouse, children, team members, the families that you and your company support, the young person you mentor, your grandparents, or parents; who ever this is for you, tell them what you are doing in 2018 and then go do it.  You will not let them down.

What do you commit to and who will you commit to in 2018?
